Appreciation Evening for Vint Cerf & Bob Kahn
Tuesday, May 10, 2005, 7 - 9:30 p.m., Tysons Corner VA
Our own Bob Kahn and Vint Cerf have been named winners of the Association for Computing Machinery's prestigious Turing Award (story below).
The Turing Award will be presented at the ACM Awards Banquet in San Francisco, in June.
Since we all can't get to the ACM meeting in San Francisco, the chapter will hold a meeting to express our gratitude for everything Bob and Vint have done, not just for the industry but for ISOC as well.
The evening will start with a social hour, with time to say hello to Vint and Bob. Several speakers (including Dennis Doughty, President, Booz-Allen-Hamilton Worldwide Technology Business) will touch briefly on the monumental changes the Internet has brought to the world. Internet pioneer Steve Crocker will ask Bob and Vint to share their thoughts, looking back on three decades of remarkable change and to the future.
We will have available replica copies of historical (Internet) documents which Vint and Bob may be so kind as to autograph for us.
During the evening, leaders of ISOC chapters around the world will be joining the meeting via the Internet to congratulate Vint and Bob, and thank the two for their key roles in the start and growth of the Internet, as well as in creating ISOC. Booz-Allen-Hamilton Conference Center, 8283 Greensboro Drive (Tysons Corner) McLean, VA 22102.

Vint Cerf and Bob Kahn winners of the Turing Award
Feb. 16, 2005 -- ACM, the Association for Computing Machinery, has named Vinton G. Cerf and Robert E. Kahn the winners of the 2004 A.M. Turing Award, considered the "Nobel Prize of Computing," for pioneering work on the design and implementation of the Internet's basic communications protocols. The Turing Award, first awarded in 1966, and named for British mathematician Alan M. Turing, carries a $100,000 prize, with financial support provided by Intel Corporation. Cerf and Kahn developed TCP/IP, a format and procedure for transmitting data that enables computers in diverse environments to communicate with each other. We are proud that Bob and Vint are long-standing members of this chapter of The Internet Society.More at: [ACM Announcement] [NY Times article (registration required, free)]
